In line with the 25th celebration of Cebu Press Freedom week, Freeman and Banat News conducted a forum centered on “Believe it or Not: Journalism and Blogging in the Age of Fake News” attended by broadcasters, journalists, bloggers and Communication students from different universities in Cebu yesterday.
“Our goal is to build the perfect personalised newspaper for every person in the world,” said Mark Zuckerberg in 2014, the creator of Facebook. This newspaper would “show you the stuff that’s going to be most interesting to you”.
Now that we are in the era where in the need for journalism to restore trust and credibility has reached the brink, can we say that what Zuckerberg said perfectly explains why Facebook is deemed to be the most terrible source of news?
“Fake news” is a term that has already been debased. It is defined as an entirely fabricated report disguising as a news story. It is indefensible and extraordinarily viral. It is created by the kinds of people who, when asked, might call their work satire, or admit that they’re in it for the money or for the thrill of deception.
The old media’s dominance and the old media’s traditional role of public service died out with the realization of the idea that the public has now the ability to become actors, rather than mere spectators.
“Journalism is ruled with the principle of supply and Demand, what the public demands to know and to have, journalists make sure to provide” said one of the speakers in the forum.
This hit me, yes, fake news exist because the public demands for it. Public shuns real news stories because these don’t go along with what really interest them. Objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than emotional appeals.
The public is deceived with fake news because they only want to read news that can go inside their personal biases. You are a Pro-Duterte so you consider news stories reflecting good sides of Duterte as real ones. Public demands journalists to be unbiased and so journalists strive to not becoming one.
But, isn’t life biased from the start? Aren’t journalists practicing bias on deciding which news becomes the banner story or what lead will you use to draft your story?
“When you come to a point wherein you realize that life is ruled by our personal biases, life becomes easier”-said another speaker.
And yes, I totally agree.
Nevertheless, as Cebu Media celebrates Press freedom week, let us continue to seek truth and promote fair play and decency in the news we provide for the public. Let us also condemn those who make up stories, spread fake news that sow fear and division among people. Continue the campaign #NotofakeNews
